Ramadan: The Month of Sharing and Helping Others

Ramadan: The Month of Sharing and Helping Others

"He is not one of us who sleeps full while his neighbor is hungry."

Ramadan is not just about staying hungry. Fasting is a means to discipline our nafs, learn patience, and strengthen our servitude to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). However, the spirit of Ramadan is not limited to personal worship; this month is also about helping and sharing with others.

Allah the Almighty says in the Qur’an:

"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous." (Al-Baqarah, 2:183)

This month is not just about experiencing hunger and thirst but also about understanding the condition of those in need and extending a helping hand to them. While we set our tables with abundant food, we must remember those who struggle to find a meal or even a place to shelter.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

"He is not one of us who sleeps full while his neighbor is hungry." (Hakim, Al-Mustadrak, 4/183, Hadith no: 7307)

Ramadan is the best time to give charity and support those in need. The Prophet (ﷺ) was the most generous of people, and he would increase his generosity even more during Ramadan. We should follow his noble example and open the doors of goodness by sharing what we have.

A Time to Connect with the Qur’an

This blessed month is also the month of the Qur’an, as it was during Ramadan that the Qur’an was revealed:

"The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful." (Al-Baqarah, 2:185)

Therefore, reading, understanding, and applying the Qur’an in our lives is among the most significant acts of worship in Ramadan. The Qur’an not only teaches us about worship but also about social justice, mercy, and helping others.

Truly Living Ramadan Through Giving and Sharing

One of the greatest acts of worship in this month is giving in charity. Our Lord says:

"Those who spend their wealth [in Allah 's way] by night and by day, secretly and publicly - they will have their reward with their Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve. (Al-Baqarah, 2:274)

Let us make Ramadan a blessed time not just for ourselves but also for those in need around us. By sharing a piece of bread, a bowl of soup, or a simple act of kindness, we can experience the true spirit of Ramadan.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) grant us His mercy, make us generous, and help us make the most of Ramadan. Ameen!
